Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this photography class:

Gelatin dry plates were introduced in 1871 by R. L. Maddox. The process uses hard gelatin that is swelled and melted. The addition of silver nitrate and salts create a faster photographic emulsion than wet plate. This silver gelatin film is hand applied onto glass or aluminum plates to make negatives and/or positives. One key characteristic of dry plates is that they can be stored for an extensive amount of time before and after exposure allowing the artist to develop the plates when convenient.

In this weekend workshop, participants will learn how to mix and coat gelatin silver dry plates under the guidance of the instructor. On day two of the workshop, students will practice shooting dry plate negatives, using 10 pre-coated plates each that are provided by the instructor. Students will learn to mix their own developer from scratch and develop their dry plate images. Students will be able to take home their coated plates from day one of the workshop to continue practicing their dry plate shooting after the end of the workshop.

Tuition includes a $100 materials fee.
