Melissa Terman

Teaches at Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan

Melissa Terman left her position as an advertising director in 2001 to pursue a career as a glass artist, metalsmith and jewelry designer. Trained as a glassblower, fuser and caster at Urban Glass in Brooklyn, and as a metalsmith at the JCC in Manhattan, Melissa continues to grow her body of work and experiments with her particular interest in the marriage of glass and metals. In 2004, Melissa launched the glass fusing program (the only Manhattan based glass program) at the JCC where she teaches her students to create glass elements in the kiln that are then transformed into their own unique jewelry designs. She is also the evening bead stringing instructor and has developed the advanced bead stringing with wire and chain workshop taught exclusively at the JCC. Melissa is in the process of seeking funding to create a “beading for the blind” course as she was inspired by one of her students, a woman who has been completely blind since birth.

This class was life-changing for me, a lawyer who thought she did not have a creative bone in her body. The teacher was AWESOME. I learned techniques to make jewelry in a non-judgmental and supportive environment. I learned that maybe I do have a creative bone in my body! Maybe more than one!

This was my first experience with anything creative. I loved this glass fusion class. Melissa Terman is a great teacher. She’s patient, has a great eye and is extremely clear in how she teaches and coaches. Glass cutting is dangerous but she makes it fun and not at all scary. After four weeks, I produced a number of pieces that are really beautiful and useful (plates, jewelry). I will continue taking additional classes with Melissa.

Instructor was very knowledgeable, patient and talented. She demonstrated her art and love for her craft beautifully and really cared about our progression in the field. She helped us out of class on her on time by responding to our emails etc.

Melissa is a very kind and passionate woman. She's a great teacher who really cares about the students and making sure they understand the technique. I found glass fusion to be a waste of money for a course because we didn't learn anything about the kiln - mostly just placing the glass in nice arrangements - ideas which we had to come up with on our own anyway. We learned some terminology but not enough for a three hour class X4 weeks worth. A con for many JCC classes is that they always charge for supplies last minute. Before you know it you've paid $50 more than you expected on supplies that you EXPECTED would be included in the not-so-cheap price of the course itself.
