John Scoff

Teaches at Home Cooking New York

John Scoff joined Home Cooking New York in 2006. After 15 years of restaurant work, culminating most recently as Executive Chef of a Low Country bistro in South Carolina, John continues to believe strongly in working with local, fresh ingredients. John's apprenticeships under several highly-regarded, award-winning chefs gave him the culinary expertise and the sense of professionalism he needed to become a well-respected restaurant chef. Then in 2004, John truly found his calling when he accepted a position as Executive Chef-Instructor at a recreational cooking school in historic downtown Charleston. As a teacher there, he discovered how much he enjoys sharing his passion for and knowledge of cuisine.

I was excited to take this beginners class to learn to make these korean dishes. Jennifer, our instructor was easy going (always had a smile on her face) and was full of information. We were taught technique and she answered our questions while we made several different dishes. I enjoyed myself immensely! I have to say that when I left the class I was walking down the street, singing in my head "I'm in heaven..." LOL Can't wait for this weekend to make pork dumplings and for the next several weekends will attempt to make another dish taught in class like the kimchi fried rice with a fried egg on top and the beef bulgogi, before I forget what I learned in class. And next month the Kimchi Jigae which I found surprisingly delicious as I'm not a fan of spicy food. I highly recommend this class especially if taken with Jennifer!

The instructor was very informative and gave tips on several fundamental techniques in baking. However, it was a lot less interactive than I anticipated, as the instructor did 90% of the baking, allowing the students to do a handful of the techniques for short time. I enjoyed it, but in my opinion, it was not a great value for the price.

It was an interesting and fun class overall, and the instructor was great. I would have preferred a more hands-on class, though. This was more of a demonstration with a handful of hands-on tasks thrown in. Admittedly, it's hard to see how everything in this class could be made hands-on. It would be rather difficult to make just one or two biscuits, or to make a tiny batch of shrimp and grits.

The instructor was knowledgeable & personable but this was more of a cooking demo than an actual cooking class (we practiced some very basic knife skills). The food at the end was amazing but there was no easy way to take home the leftovers (and there were LOTS of leftovers)! If they provided containers and bags that would have been great (or suggested we bring some along in case of leftovers).

John taught us the tips and tricks of cooking fish as well as demonstrating and allowing us to participate in the preparation of 4 different fish dishes. Each recipe was more delicious than the next and the fish was cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend cooking classes at Home Cooking New York and am planning on taking more in the future.

Even with all of this conversation, the class never felt rushed. I definitely feel like I understand more of the basics of cooking (how to properly chop and roast vegetables, how to pan sear meat) and got an amazing meal out of it as well Seriously, the steak was divine.
